Tesco Community Fundraising

A huge “Thank You” to Tesco Ireland and all who supported the recent fundraiser for our ASD classes in Tesco, Douglas.

Macroom Buffalo Farm

4th class had a great day visiting Macroom Buffalo farm as part of the Erasmus+ programme learning about local produce and the route from field to fork. Dorothy gave them a tour of the farm where the boys had the opportunity to get up close to the herd of water buffalo and pet the new calves. They watched a video on the cheese making process and loved tasting mozzarella, feta, haloumi and ricotta!

Our 1st class pupils attended a sustainable development workshop at Scala centre in Blackrock, Cork on 1st April 2019.

The children learned about the importance of the 17 global goals and how they can make a difference in order to create a better, cleaner world for all.

Our boys engaged in fun activities such as fishing for plastic fish in a tub littered with plastic pollution, planting their own seeds in recycled pots from toilet rolls and singing a song about saving energy!

The boys created such a buzz at the workshop that they even made it onto our local newspaper!

On Thursday 4th April half of our fourth class students went to Mahon Farmers’ Market! We had such a great time seeing all the local produce and range of items on offer!  When we asked shoppers why they visited local markets instead of supermarkets their responses included “support local”, “less plastic”, “Sustainable produce”, “Greater range of fresh goods”, “nicer fruit and vegetables than in the stores”, “less imported goods”, “we know where the food comes from” and “I wouldn’t shop anywhere else”.

We asked a local spice company about their carbon footprint, their spices come from a sustainable farm in India, they’re shipped in bulk to Ireland and then ground and packaged in Middleton.

On Wednesday 10th April the second half of Ms. O’ Callaghan’s Class visited Rohu’s Country Market in Innishannon.  They learned about the origin of the produce and the importance of supporting local!

Polytunnel before and after!

A huge “THANK YOU” to all the volunteers who gave up their time last Saturday to help with our Polytunnel and Sensory Garden.  Everyone worked really hard and as you can see the results are fantastic! We will be continuing to develop the garden this weekend so if you are available and would like to be involved please contact Mr. Crowley on 021-4371875

Bhí an-sport again i SML le linn Seachtain na Gaeilge I mbliana. Tháinig na cailíní ó rang 4 trasna chun páirt a ghlacadh i dTráth na gCeist. D’éirigh go híontach leis na foirne measctha. Bhí gach éinne sásta leis na torthaí.

I rith na seachtaine rinne na buachaillí sár iarracht ár bpotaí óir a líonadh le boinn óir. Gach uair a labhair éinne as Gaeilge fuair said bonn óir le chur sa phota. Bhí na leipreacháin an-sásta leo féin i ndeire na dála.

Réitigh rang 5 agus rang 1 Bingó a imirt le chéile sa leabharlann. Chabhraigh na buachailli sinsearacha leis na leaids óga an cluiche a imirt. Bhain said an sult as. Tháinig rang 4 agus rang 2 le chéile freisin chun triail a bhaint as. D’eirigh go breá leo.

Ar an Aoine, 15ú Márta, tháinig an Carrigdhoun Comhaltas go dtí an scoil. Sheinn said ceol breá bríomhar dúinn agus bhain na buachaillí óga an-chraic as Ballaí Luimní a dhéanamh. D’fhoghlaim na daltaí sinsearacha conas Ionsaí na hInse a dhéanamh. Bhí said ar fheabhas. Míle buíochas le Fionán Cogan a mhúin dóibh é. Ansin rinne John O’Keefe agus Ann damhsa ar an sean nós dúinn go léir. Mhúin said an bhun chéim agus an luascadh do na buachailli  agus ar aghaidh leo go léir ag baint sult as an ocáid.

Spike Ball

On Tuesday the 19th of March two teams from 6th class represented our school at the Cork Spikeball Final which took place in the Mardyke Arena in Cork. The teams played in different pools to begin with. They enjoyed some challenging matches against tough opposite and earned some well deserved victories.

One team was fortunate enough to qualify out of their group and made it to the knockouts where they won a thrilling semi- final against their opposition from Innishannon. Despite some great play and teamwork in the final they couldn’t overcome their opposition. However they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and did the school proud!

Our STEM Academy recently visited DePuy Johnson and Johnson in Ringaskiddy as part of Engineers Week. Our students began with a demonstration from working engineers of the technology they use in their everyday work. They were show Virtual Reality headsets and mechanical arms and how they can be used in manufacturing. Having recently bought a 3D printer for our STEM club, our boys were in their element seeing industrial printers in action and their real world applications. We ended the day with a trip to one of the colossal wind turbines which really was amazing to see up close. A huge thanks to Susan and all the helpers in DePuy for giving our students a brilliant day out.

Cyber Safety – How to help keep your children safe online, talk by John Wills (School Cyber Safety Consultant, psychologist) for all parents, 6th April 2017 at 7pm.

Students from 3rd – 6th will have workshops by John during the school day and staff will also attend a talk on best practice in schools.

Mental Health Awareness Day

On Wednesday, 22nd February, we celebrated our first ‘Mental Health Awareness’ Day.    At Scoil Mhuire Lourdes we endeavour to cater for all needs of our school community – educational, social and mental wellbeing.  As part of our awareness day pupils were invited to dress in colours and make a donation towards Pieta House.   Mindfulness activities were undertaken in all classes and will be continued to be integrated into our everyday curriculum.

We are delighted to have raised €575 from our Colours Day.   A presentation was made to one of our past pupils, Aidan Roche, who is organising many charity events and fundraisers for this worthy cause.  Aidan organised a charity ball in Silver Springs last month and is working to raise awareness of mental health among young people.    For more information on supports offered by this organisation please visit  A HUGE “Thank you” to all who donated.

Irving Oil – Whitegate Oil Refinery.

The boys in Ms Byrne’s 5th class made history lately when they were the first and only primary or secondary school to ever visit Whitegate Oil Refinery.

The boys had the privilege of receiving a talk and presentation on what happens on the site in the production of oil products. Afterwards we had a bus tour around the Refinery when we saw for ourselves the different areas of production.

This was all part of our whole-school Erasmus Project on Plastic (a bi-product of oil).

We are very grateful to Irving Oil – Whitegate Oil Refinery for their welcome and special courtesy.

Christmas Giving!

During the lead up to Christmas Ms Byrne’s 5th class decided to donate €5 each to buy gifts for Trocaire.

They collected €150 and bought a water pump and a goat.

The water pump will provide a village with fresh water and eliminate the threat of disease caused by drinking dirty water.

The goat will provide a source of food for many years to come as it will give milk, cheese and meat. When there will be a kid, it will be donated to another family in the village….and so it goes on…….

We are very proud of them for making this very thoughtful decision.  Well done to all involved!

Our STEM Academy took part in the second annual VEX Robotics competition which was held in CIT last Thursday and Friday. We were honoured to be asked to attend the pilot competition last year and this years competition was even better with over 35 schools entering!! Our team had been designing and testing their robot since they got it in September and the finished product was absolutely brilliant! The other half of the team did a project on forensic science which they presented to two very impressed judges.
After two hard days of robotic games we were thrilled to finish 2nd in the individual event and 3rd in the team events! Our boys were a credit to both the school and themselves. Congratulations boys!

Tuesday (9th of February) we will be holding a talk on keeping safe online as part of Safe Internet Day 2016.   We constantly get parents asking us for advice on what they can do to protect their children online and how to keep up with the latest technology.  In response to these queries we have arranged an expert with over 15 years experience in the industry to come in and give a talk on the subject. This talk is not just for the parents of our students.   We feel an awareness in this area is so important that we invite all parents in the community interested to attend.

They were down in the soccer club last Saturday selling food and drink at a stall and did very well. Today in the hall they were selling stock in the hall and they did fantastically well. After paying back their seed money the lads made a whopping profit of €740!!!! They will be giving proceeds to a local charity and also buying books for the new library in the school. When we arrived in Heathrow our bags were collected by our host school and we went straight to the science museum. It was great. Then we went to meet our host families, we went back to our houses and had dinner. We then went to a Westend show called Stomp. They make music out of everything. We didn’t get home till twelve and we were all wrecked the day after. On Friday we had our gaelic tournament, we split the group into two teams. We won all of our matches. After we went back to the school and played soccer and had some donuts. We spent the rest of the day with our families and a lot of us went on a Wembley tour. On Saturday we had to take a lot of underground trains (tubes), we went to Madame Tussauds and there was loads of wax sculptures. We went to McDonalds for lunch and it was packed. After that we started lining up for the London Dungeons but we realised we only had time to do one more thing. So we had to have a vote between Lillywhites (sports shop) or the Dungeons. Pretty much everyone voted for Lillywhites, we spent about two hours there. We bought so much stuff that the teachers had to buy another bag each to carry it all. Then we had to ride the tube for another hour. Then we had some more time with our families. Some of us went to see Iron Man 3 and some of us went bowling. On Sunday we went to the Reading v QPR match, unfortunately it ended O-O and both teams were relegated. We then had a training session in the indoor Reading Academy pitch and it was great. We then started to make our way home. A lot of us forgot to take water out of our bags and we had to have them searched at security (except for Mr Crowley’s group). When our plane landed we collected the bags and everyone was waiting for us. We came through the doors and the airport erupted with clapping and cheering. We said goodbye to the teachers and we went home . It was a great trip and everyone enjoyed it, my favourite parts were Lilywhites and Stomp. I really think it is a great opportunity for 6th class and I will remember it for the rest of my life. by   David Carroll     Dissolving Boundaries Last Thursday, 18th April, Ms Daly’s 3rd Class and Ms. O’ Callaghan’s 4th Class travelled to Croke Park, Dublin to meet our Partner schools from County Derry.  Lots of new friends were made and a great day was had by all!
